Trying to understand Yeti cooler sizes and find the right one for your needs? We know it can be difficult to navigate your way around the sheer number of options available.
Contents
Finding the right size Yeti cooler for your needs is important for several reasons:
- Food safety: If you are planning to use the cooler for storing food or drinks, it’s important to have a cooler that’s the right size for your needs. A cooler that’s too small may not be able to accommodate all the items you need to store, while a cooler that’s too big may not keep your food and drinks at the right temperature. This can increase the risk of spoilage or contamination, which can be a health hazard.
- Convenience: Choosing the right size cooler can make your outdoor activities more convenient. A cooler that’s too small may require frequent refilling, while a cooler that’s too large can be difficult to transport and may take up too much space in your car or storage area.
- Energy efficiency: A cooler that’s the right size for your needs can also be more energy efficient. If you choose a cooler that’s too large, you’ll need to use more ice or cooling packs to keep the contents cold, which can lead to increased energy consumption and higher costs.
- Cost-effectiveness: Buying a cooler that’s the right size for your needs can also be more cost-effective. A larger cooler may cost more to purchase and operate, while a smaller cooler may not be able to meet your needs and require you to purchase additional coolers or bags.
Overall, finding the right size cooler for your needs is important for ensuring food safety, convenience, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. It’s important to consider your specific needs and the activities you’ll be using the cooler for to make an informed decision.

How to Maximize Ice Retention in your Yeti
Start With a Cold Cooler
The colder you can get your cooler before you fill it the better. If you can sacrifice a bag of ice to pre-cool the box it will mean that once cold, you can toss out the old ice and add your fresh, along with your drinks and food.
This will ensure your ice stays…well, like ice for much longer. Be sure to avoid leaving the lid open for too long unnecessarily as that is a surefire way to lose a log of ice and cold air quickly.
Cut Down on Air Space
Dead airspace in your cooler will speed up the melting of ice. If you have excess space once you’ve loaded up your cooler, fill any remaining gaps with additional ice (or beer!) to cut down on dead-space.
Alternatively, you can use a towel to line the top of the cooler and push it down to fill in the gaps.
Pre Freeze Your Cooler Contents
If it’s possible, pre-freeze any food or drink you will be adding to the cooler, this will, of course, depends on the length of your trip. However, doing so will mean they go on the cooler ice-cold, and will remain chilled as they slowly defrost.
As you need a beer or other beverage, simply remove from the cooler to speed up the defrosting as needed.
How Much Ice Should I Use?
Yeti recommend a 2:1 ratio of ice-to-contents goes into their coolers. As mentioned above, if you find you have too much space remaining, simply add more ice or a towel to the cooler to fill in the air gaps.
What Makes Yeti Coolers So Good
YETI not only compete with the best cooler brands, but they also dominate is so many areas. Here’s why:
- They are virtually indestructible and come with a 5-year warranty.
- They have 2″ thick insulated walls making them super efficient.
- Vortex drainage system to remove melted ice and water after your trip.
- The Non-slip feet keep the cooler in place.
- The anchor points and tie-downs allow you to secure your Yeti to a boat, truck bed or trailer.
- They are bear resistant, so great for camping in the wilderness or in areas with a high bear population.
- Can double as a seat for on your boat or when camping.
All Yeti coolers are made with the rotomolding process which makes them extremely durable since they are a single piece of material which eliminates joints and more importantly failure points.
The coolers made by Yeti are designed to be multi-purpose. For example, they are extremely popular amongst boat owners and fishermen thanks to their ability to keep their catch fresh for hours on end.
Then you have campers and RV’ers who like the portability and using their cooler as a refrigerator when away from home for an extended period.
They also double as a comfortable sleep when sitting around the campfire, at the beach or on the boat whilst waiting for your next bite.
