Items to Have on Hand When You Survive in the Snow

When you survive in the snow, it’s important to have essential supplies on hand in case of an emergency. In a snowstorm, you might not be able to drive somewhere for help or take other usual routes outside your home or business. You may also be unable to leave your property safely until the storm passes. We cannot control when we will experience snow or how much of it there will be, but we can prepare for it. Having essential items on hand in case of an emergency is one way to make sure you are ready no matter what Mother Nature throws your way. If you live in a snowy area and know that conditions may be treacherous, consider keeping these items on hand so you’re prepared no matter what!

    Shovel

A shovel can help you clear snow off pathways and driveways so you can leave your property. Be sure to keep it inside so it’s accessible if the snow starts to fall and you need to clear a path. If you use a snow blower, be sure to have extra gas on hand in case you run out. Some shovels have a fold-up handle so they can be easily stored when not in use. If you have a roof deck or other area where you may need to shovel snow, consider getting a shovel with a long handle for easier shoveling, particularly on stairs.

    Flashlight and Batteries

A flashlight is an essential item to have on hand because you never know when you may need it. During a snowstorm, you may need it to see outside and make sure you can safely navigate wherever you need to go. Flashlights come in many varieties and may have different features, such as a longer life span, brighter light, or waterproof features. Consider the features you need in a flashlight and the places you may need to use it so you can choose one that fits those needs. If you are using a flashlight during an emergency, make sure you have fresh batteries on hand. If the power goes out or you need to use a generator, you’ll be ready.

    Battery-Operated Radio

Like a flashlight, a battery-operated radio can be useful during a snowstorm. If the storm is expected to last a few days, you may want to keep up with news and weather updates so you know when it is safe to go outside. You can also use a radio to keep track of the road conditions so you know when it’s safe to drive. If you hear that the road conditions are dangerous, you can avoid driving until they improve. If you have a smartphone, you may be able to download an app that lets you keep track of weather conditions and road conditions. If you rely on a radio, make sure you have extra batteries on hand in case the power goes out.

    Blankets and Warm Clothing

Blankets and warm clothing are essential items to have on hand, particularly if you are outdoors during a snowstorm. If you are walking to your car or another location, be sure to wear warm clothing and have a blanket with you to keep warm. If you get stuck outside or another emergency occurs, you will need a blanket to keep warm. Having warm clothing on hand is also important because you may have to go outside to shovel snow or walk to your car. And don’t forget about your pets! Animals need warm clothing too so make sure you have blankets or coats for your furry friends.

    Road Flares

In case you get stuck in a snowstorm or other emergency situation, road flares can help you get the attention of other drivers or emergency personnel. If you need to change a tire or have car trouble, you can use road flares to signal help. You can keep road flares in your car’s trunk so they are ready if you need them. If you drive a commercial vehicle, you may be required to keep road flares on board. Make sure you keep road flares away from extreme heat and they are in good condition so they work when you need them.

    Potable Water Supply

If you lose access to running water during a snowstorm, you will need to have a supply of drinking water on hand. You can store drinking water in regular plastic water bottles or in water jugs. You may want to keep a few extra on hand in case you lose some or need more for your household during the snowstorm. If your drinking water supply is in water jugs, make sure you keep them out of extreme cold or heat. You may also want to mark the jugs as containing drinking water so anyone who finds them knows they are not meant for another use.

    Drying Equipment or Towels

During a snowstorm, you may encounter situations where you are unable to wash clothes or dry them outside. If you have to wait for the storm to pass before you can leave your property, you may need to keep your clothes clean until you can take them to the dry cleaners or laundromat. You may want to keep drying equipment, like towels or a drying rack, on hand to help you get your clothes dry quickly. You may also want to keep towels on hand to wipe off your shoes and other items outside if you need to walk through snow.

    Food Storage Containers

If your power goes out during a snowstorm, you may not be able to keep food items as fresh. You can keep food fresh for longer by storing it in airtight containers. You may want to keep extra food storage containers on hand in case you need to double up on foods that need to be stored. Keeping food fresh is important because you do not know how long your food will last when the power is out. If you have small children, make sure you have plenty of baby food on hand as well. You may want to keep this in the refrigerator, but make sure it is not in the freezer or it may get too cold and become a health hazard.

    Conclusion

When you survive in the snow, it’s important to have essential supplies on hand in case of an emergency. In a snowstorm, you may not be able to safely leave your property until it passes. You may also be unable to travel to get help until the storm stops. We cannot control when we will experience snow or how much of it there will be, but we can prepare for it. Having essential items on hand is one way to make sure you are ready for whatever Mother Nature throws your way. Make sure to keep these 10 items on hand so you can be prepared no matter what!
