Tips To Get You On The Snowboarding Scene This Winter!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Nothing is more magical than a whirling, whooshing flurry of white falling from the sky. And when that snow lands on a hill, it’s even better. There’s something about being outside in the winter that makes people want to get active and explore. The cold air and snow-covered trees create perfect conditions for outdoor sports like hockey, cross-country skiing, ice skating… and of course, snowboarding! If you love the idea of exploring fresh powder during this chilly time of year but aren’t quite sure how to go about doing so, we have some great tips to get you on the local snowboarding scene this winter. If you know someone who is into snowboarding, check out some items they may love.

Know The Basics Before You Go

We’re not suggesting you get your board all ready to go for a trip to Aspen before you know how to stand up on a board and stop, but there are some things you should know before you hit the slopes. First and foremost, know your abilities. If you’re a beginner, don’t dive into a terrain park full of rails and jumps; stick to the bunny slopes and green trails. If you’re an intermediate or advanced rider, don’t ride with beginners and be sure to let the lift operator know where you want to go and what you’re comfortable riding. Always be aware of other riders and the conditions too, like icy patches or falling snow.

Get Some Gear

Of course, getting the right gear is essential when you start snowboarding. You’ll need a good pair of boots, a pair of gloves and a snowboard. If you don’t have your own set yet, you can find great deals on gear on sites like Amazon. If you’re not sure you’ll stick with it, renting gear is another good option. You can also purchase a beginner package, which generally includes your basic gear and a lesson.

Find A Class Or Workshop

If you’re new to snowboarding, you’ll find that taking a class or workshop is a great way to ease into the sport. At your resort, you might find a general introduction to snowboarding that will get you comfortable with the basics; you may also find beginner snowboarding classes that focus on certain skills like stopping, turning and going up hills. You might also find adult or senior-focused classes that are tailored to your abilities. If you live near a city, you may find indoor snowboarding classes as well.

Check Out The Local Resort

If you’ve never been to a nearby ski resort before, now is a great time to check it out. You might find special events or festivals geared towards newcomers. Many resorts offer free or low-cost days during the coldest months to introduce others to the sport. You can also check out the local snowboard shop and see if any staff members are hosting free clinics.

Try Snow Shoeing Or Cross Country Skiing Too!

While we all love snowboarding, sometimes you may find yourself in a region where it’s not snowing enough to hit the slopes. If you’re in a place where you’re waiting for fresh powder, try snow shoeing or cross country skiing instead. Both are great outdoor winter sports that will give you a chance to explore and enjoy the snow-covered landscape without having to wait for more snowfall.

Become A Member At Your Local Resort

If you want to hit the slopes more often, consider becoming a member of a nearby resort. This will allow you to get out on the hill and hit the fresh powder as often as you’d like. Becoming a member is usually pretty affordable, and you often get added benefits like discounted gear or free lessons.

Bundle Up And Go Snow Camping!

If you want to enjoy the snow but don’t want to deal with going over to a nearby resort, try snow camping. Find a nearby lake or reservoir that has a frozen surface and bring a tent and sleeping bag. You can even bring a few friends along for the fun of it!

Don’t Forget To Celebrate During Winter!

While the cold, snowy months are perfect for outdoor adventures and snow lovers, they’re not always the most social times of the year. If you want to celebrate winter but don’t have a group of friends to do so with, why not host your own winter celebration? You can do anything from hosting a winter solstice party to a winter sports themed event. With these tips, you’ll not only be a better snowboarder, but you’ll have a better winter, too. So go ahead and get out there!
