Shooting 101: Improving Your Accuracy With a Firearm

by John Wren February 24, 2025

A man wearing a black shirt standing in a shooting range holding a pistol while shooting at a target in the distance.

Hitting your target involves balance, technique, and mental focus. With consistent practice and knowledge of the basics, you can turn every shot into a bullseye. However, you need a solid place to start.

With these shooting tips, improving your accuracy with a firearm should be a breeze. Whether you’re shooting for sport, self-defense training, or a competition, get ready to elevate your skills.

    1. Get a Grip

Your grip on your gun is the foundation of accurate shooting. Holding firearms correctly not only improves control but also helps you manage the recoil. Your dominant hand should firmly wrap around the grip, with the web of your hand high against the backstrap. Meanwhile, your support hand should complement the dominant hand, with fingers wrapping tightly around the front of the grip.

Both hands should apply even pressure to keep you stable. If you’re using a rifle, reviewing and comparing the best shooting rests can help you find an accessory that improves the accuracy of your shots.

    2. Master Your Stance

Your stance is the foundation for a good shot, so get it right. Start by positioning your feet shoulder-width apart to maintain balance. Lean forward slightly, bend your knees, and keep your weight over the balls of your feet to absorb recoil. Finally, keep your torso square to the target, with your shoulders relaxed but engaged.

Consistency in your stance builds muscle memory, making it easier to replicate under various shooting conditions. Practicing with a deliberate focus on your stance during dry-fire sessions will reinforce these mechanics.

    3. Perfect Your Trigger Control

Achieving perfect trigger control is essential for accurate shots. Begin by placing the pad of your index finger, not the joint, on the trigger. Apply gradual pressure straight to the rear without any jerking or flinching. Focus on keeping your grip firm but relaxed so that the trigger pull is smooth and controlled.

Hold your sight alignment throughout the process, and avoid rushing the shot. For many people, training with laser sights to maximize accuracy is a great way to improve quickly.

    4. Control Your Breathing

Controlling your breathing is a crucial component of accurate shooting. Taking deep breaths reduces unnecessary movement and helps you stabilize yourself.

Focus on breathing in deeply and exhaling slowly while aiming. Ideally, take the shot during the natural pause after exhaling, when your body is most still. This minimizes disruptions caused by chest movements and allows for a more consistent firing process. With practice, mastering your breathing technique will enhance your precision.

    Build Confidence With Every Shot

Improving your accuracy with a firearm is a rewarding process that’s accessible to everyone, no matter your skill level. The key is to master the basics, practice regularly, and stay patient with your progress. Even the world’s top shooters started with these foundational techniques!
