Van Life vs. RV Living: Which Is Right for You?

by John Wren May 2, 2025
    written by John Wren

Travel lovers, have you been dreaming of life on the open road? If so, you might have to decide whether van life or RV living is right for you. Let’s explore the unique appeal of both lifestyles to help you figure out which option fits your vision.

    What Is Van Life?

Van life is all about minimalism, mobility, and flexibility. It appeals to those who love off-the-grid living, crave simplicity, and enjoy the creative challenge of making the most out of limited space. They tend to do custom conversions to transform a regular van into a livable space where every inch of the vehicle serves a purpose.

In a van, navigating narrow city streets or secluded backroads is a breeze compared to maneuvering an RV. It’s easier to park, faster to set up, and great for spontaneous detours. Plus, the customization options mean your space is truly yours.

However, living in a van means embracing smaller spaces, fewer built-in amenities, and a lifestyle that could lean on public facilities for showers and restrooms.

    What Is RV Living?

RVs—from compact campers to large motorhomes—are designed for relaxation on the move. With spacious interiors and modern amenities like full kitchens, bathrooms, and separate sleeping areas, RV living is the more luxurious option. It’s especially appealing for families, snowbirds, or retirees who want to explore without sacrificing comfort.

Because RVs offer more room to spread out, they are great for longer trips or full-time living. You’ll also find a strong sense of community at RV parks, where BBQs, social events, and friendly neighbors are part of the experience.

However, these large motorhomes can make navigating tight areas challenging, and you’ll need to plan ahead for parking, turning, and route restrictions. You’ll also have to plan for the regulations and hazards of RVing in national parks if you want to participate in this popular form of RV exploration.

    Planning Your Space and Vehicle

Before committing to either lifestyle, make sure you inspect the vehicle you want to purchase. Does it have leaks, outdated wiring, worn tires, or faulty plumbing? Whether it’s a pre-owned van or a shiny new RV, it needs a thorough inspection to save you time and stress later.

Also, space is precious, no matter what you drive. Even in larger RVs, you should know how to maximize every inch of space so the area doesn’t feel cramped.

Additionally, you’ll have to store your vehicle when you’re not using it. Driveways with coverings work well enough for vans, but RVs benefit from more advanced protection, such as a storage unit. Knowing how to maximize space in your RV storage unit can keep your seasonal gear, tools, or travel extras secure while freeing up space for everyday essentials.

Which Is the Best Fit for You?

So, which is right for you—van life or RV living? That answer depends on your travel goals, personality, and what kind of adventure you want to create. No matter what you choose, you’re sure to have a great time. Grab your map, prep your ride, and hit the road with confidence.
