Fishing is one of the most relaxing pastimes that you can turn into a proper vacation. Whether you prefer to isolate yourself in nature or spend time out on the water with your friends or family, you want to find the perfect spot to cast out. Here are some of the best spots in Texas for planning a fishing trip, and a bit of information on what type of fish you’re likely to reel in.

Guadalupe River

The Gudalupe River is only a short drive away from Austin, so it’s great for a weekend fishing trip where you set up camp or just a simple day trip to cast your lures. Thanks to conservation efforts from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, this river is home to lots of tasty trout all year round. You can reel in a big brown trout, and with the right fish filleting technique, cook yourself up a tasty fish dinner around the campfire.

Lake Travis

Lake Travis is one of the most extravagant and famous fishing spots in the Austin area. You can find different types of bass and catfish, depending on what you’re looking for, and lots of great spots to camp out for the duration of your trip. If you don’t have one of your own, renting a boat is a great way to see Lake Travis and get out to some of the deeper, more isolated areas of the lake, where the fish are far more likely to be biting.

Caddo Lake

Caddo Lake is one of the best spots in Texas for planning a fishing trip. Not only is this large, natural lake home to a wide range of tasty fish, but it’s an absolutely beautiful sight that everyone should experience. Out on the lake you’re likely to see everything from gently floating lily pads to beautiful canopies of Spanish moss. It’s a tranquil experience that’s made even better when you can take a deep breath and throw out that first line.

Lake Fork

Adventurous anglers seeking bass would do well to cast out in the enormous natural reservoir of Lake Fork. While you may find other fish like crappie and sunfish, the main draw of Lake Fork is all about that bass. Not only are there many different species, but most of the top 50 largest bass ever caught in Texas were caught right here at Lake Fork. So, if you like big bass, you might want to test your mettle out here.

There are many incredible lakes and rivers here teeming with fish, so pack up your tacklebox and start planning your next big fishing adventure in the Lone Star State!
