New Whitetail Magazine Names Publisher
Elk Publishing, the parent organization of Outdoors Magazine,
is proud to welcome Craig Dougherty as publisher of
Whitetails Only, a new publication launching in the fall of 2009.
"We are delighted to have Craig on board," said James Austin, president of Elk Publishing. "He brings a wealth of hunting industry knowledge and has been a leader in the whitetail management community for years," he said.
"We expect Craig's role to far overlap the traditional 'publisher' boundaries. His input will help us shape edit that will benefit 'real' deer hunters and stay on the cutting edge of the whitetail hunting world," he said.
"It is exciting to be a part of a project like this," said Dougherty.
"Whitetails Only is primed to be a fresh face in the industry with several key community-driven components. To top it off, the people I will be working with are passionate and professional. I couldn't have asked for a better situation," he said.
During his 25 years in the hunting industry Dougherty has held senior management positions at the Crosman Corporation, Golden Eagle/Satellite Archery and Bear. He and his son Neil founded NorthCountry Whitetails, a wildlife consulting and recreation real estate company. He has been published in numerous outdoor publications, co-authored a book, served as a hunting TV consultant and has consulted with numerous hunting industry companies. He served on the Board of Directors of the National Bowhunter Education Foundation, The Archery Trade Association, and recently stepped down as Chairman of the Board of the Quality Deer Management Association after four years of leadership and growth.
Another key staff edition for Whitetails Only is Neil Dougherty, who will serve as the Director of Field Operations.
"Many people already know Neil from his numerous TV appearances, seminars, magazine articles, and best-selling book," said Austin. "There is not another person in the industry I can think of who does more on a day-to-day basis with deer hunters around the country than Neil. He refuses to rest on his laurels and continues to push the industry with his insight and observations. We are delighted to have him as the foundation of our team," said Austin.
"One of his key roles will be to act as a conduit with the hunting community and make sure
Whitetails Only is delivering leading-edge information to its readers. We have several projects planned which will focus on community involvement which he will also spearhead," said Austin.
Neil Dougherty has served as the Northern Research Director for both the Whitetail Institute and BioLogic. His co-authored book "Grow 'Em Right: A Guide to Creating Wildlife Habitat and Food Plots" is the leading selling book in the wildlife habitat field. In addition, he is the host of "Quality Whitetails TV" (Outdoor Channel). He has created 2 DVD's on wildlife habitat and is frequently cited in major publications as "one of the most knowledgeable wildlife consultants in the nation."
The Dougherty's will bring their famous 500-acre Steuben County Wildlife Habitat and Deer Hunting Demo Center to the
Whitetails Only party. An industry fixture for over 10 years, the Demo Center has been the site of countless wildlife research projects, numerous TV shows, has been covered in dozens of magazines and visited by thousands of whitetail enthusiasts. Now Whitetails Only will allow hundreds of thousands of deer hunters to keep tabs on the Center and a newly acquired 200 acre research facility with the click of a mouse.

What is the Whitetails Only Nation?
It was a simple idea—develop a Nation all about deer hunting. Do it without judgment.
Whether a hunter owns private managed land; participates on weekend deer drives with his buddies; tracks until he is exhausted; likes to daydream once a year with the old .30-30; or sleeps out in the deep woods under his bowstand the night before the season opens; recognize that they are all predators in one form or another who want to be better hunters.
Do it by finding the best deer hunters you can. Note I didn’t say writers, but rather hunters. While there are many good writers that are also good hunters, we want cutting-edge advice from people who know how to kill deer. Period.
The next step is to involve our members. This is the core philosophy of
Whitetails Only. It is their voice which will be our cement. Our interaction will open a new era for all deer hunters … A new
Whitetail
Nation.
To do this we need a forum. Whitetails Only,
the magazine and the website is a part of it, but other concepts will soon be emerging which will provide information in the blink of an eye—or the click of a mouse as the case may be.
This is our goal with the release of Whitetails
Only—community for the passionate deer hunter.
To make it all work will need guidance. For that we have turned to some of the best we know in the business. We started with Craig Dougherty. Actually it is Dr. Dougherty but he doesn’t like people to know that. As a past top executive at Golden Eagle and Bear archery, member of many hunting industry boards and task forces, owner of North Country Whitetails, book author, TV consultant…well the list goes on and on; suffice it to say Craig knows the industry as few others and we are grateful to be working with him.
Accompanying Craig is his son, Neil, who sports an equally long list of credentials. TV host, author, lecturer…to say Neil is one of the country’s top food plot and habitat guys is not a stretch. His ability to interpret whitetails is among the best in the world. Most important though, Neil loves to share his knowledge and is passionate about the community we will be developing.
Trust me when I say in the coming months we will be doing this like no one has ever done it before. Some of our regular contributors have household names. Many don’t. That doesn’t matter. The only thing that is important is that they allow their knowledge be the foundation for
Whitetails Only. You will not find a better group of hunters in the country.
Maybe those are strong words, but when you have a powerful group of tools within your grasp it is easy to be confident. While part of that is our writers and publisher, the readers and their contributions will provide our ultimate strength.
